When her youngest daughter leaves for college, Maggie Glass moves to Bell Harbor, Connecticut, a quaint village on the coast, to become a criminology professor. Her adopted home envelops her with welcoming friends and New England charm. But her hopes for a fresh start go up in smoke when her storage locker is burned to the ground. A fingerprint found at the scene connects the crime to a decade-old arson and homicide in Texas. 

An ever-curious former prosecutor, Maggie investigates the Texas case and discovers a worrisome link to her ex-husband and his current wife. Their affair ended Maggie’s marriage, fifteen years ago, and revealed her then husband to be a stranger. When the arsonist strikes again, even closer to home, Maggie investigates the string of crimes, alongside local detective Mike Finnegan. Maggie puts everything on the line to fight for herself and the life she has built in Bell Harbor.
